While often called an island Murano is in reality a group of small islands connected by bridges found in the Venetian lagoon. In the 12th century a group of glass makers from Venice moved there as in Venice it was impossible to continue their craft because of the risk of fires.
The glass making industry in Murano developed and grew in the following centuries and quickly became renowned all over Europe. Besides the undeniable quality of craftsmanship, in Murano many new techniques were developed and also many different types of glass. We have the millefiori which is glass with a flower pattern, aventurine glass which has amazing golden stripes while cristallo or crystal which is lead added to glass was improved.
From the 18th century Murano also became well known for its glass chandeliers. If you have the opportunity to stay in Venice you can get a small ferry or a water taxi to Murano and buy your glass chandeliers directly. You will have the advantage of visiting one of the many artisans workshops and ask for something custom made that can even be done while you are watching. That would suit perfectly your existing home decor.
If you cannot go to Venice but still would like an original item, there is an association called Promovetro that includes all the main artisans workshops in Murano and its label will assure you that you are buying a genuine ‘made in Murano’ piece. There are lots of fake items made in China, therefore you should be careful before you buy anything especially if it costs a substantial amount of money. Not all Murano glass chandeliers have a 18th century look there are some with bold and modern designs, there should be something to satisfy most tastes. The vast majority will be electric but you can still ask for a real candle chandelier if this is what your are looking for.
