Fire pits are highly popular patio accessories. These outdoor heaters come in many different styles, price ranges, makes, and more.
One thing you will have to consider when investing in one of these beautiful accessories is whether you want to use real wood, artificial wood, or fire glass with the pit. This is also an important thing to consider if you have an indoor or outdoor fireplace.
Real Wood
This is the traditional choice but it is also the most problematic choice. While people may love the look of wood and the crackling sound it produces, they may not want to be exposed to the smoke and particulate matter that it lets off. Whether you are using an outdoor fire pit or an indoor fireplace, real wood is not a preferable choice because it gives off a ton of carbon dioxide and other harmful fumes. The most dangerous material that it releases when burned is particulate matter, which is what causes the red eyes, runny noses, and other symptoms that people experience when they stand around a fire for too long. In addition to this, particulate matter can aggravate conditions like heart and lung disease. Fire wood may have an old world charm but it steals non-renewable resources from the environment, pollutes the air, and has dangerous health effects.
Artificial Wood
This is a far better choice than real wood. If you have a propane fire pit, which is an Eco-friendly choice, then artificial logs may be a good option. A 2006 study conducted by the EPA showed that artificial wood logs produce far less carbon monoxide and particulate matter than real wood. The study showed that it produces 75 percent less carbon monoxide which is a substantial decrease. It also showed that artificial wood released 80 percent less particulate matter. If you love the look of wood logs, then artificial wood is a great alternative. Still, it is important to note that this product is made of chemicals. There is always the chance that the logs could explode when prodded, so it is important to be careful. In addition to this, artificial logs have been known to contain traces of asbestos which can be very harmful to ones health.
Fire Glass
This is becoming a popular alternative to wood products all together. For homeowners who want a modern, beautiful, and really rather glittering look in their fire pits this product is a great choice. Fire glass is a safe product that has been benefits for the green homeowner. It does not release carbon monoxide, particulate matter, fumes, smoke, odors, or soot. It can also be used over and over and over again without melting or discoloring. The glass is tempered so that it can withstand extreme temperatures. The glass can be used with fire pits, fireplaces, or fire tables that use natural gas, propane, bioethanol, or gel fuel.
